Wintersemester 2016/17

Master-Symposium: The Grid and the Beast

The grid is part representational tool, part mathematically defined space, part worldview. It can be used as a metaphor (being on or off the grid). It form the basis of intellectual experimentation (from early Renaissance perspective drawings and 17th century mathematics to CGI and GPS). It is a recurring motif of Modernism (Mondrian, Agnes Martin, Superstudio. . .). The grid is also an important tool for modern graphic design (Max Bill, Josef Müller-Brockmann . . .). Mapping, planning, constructing, navigating, the grid has become an important underlying structure to our consciousness.
The Master students of the Merz Akademie invite you to a series of lectures and workshops where considerations on and off the grid will be discussed and further developed in experimentation.
