REMEDIATE AT THE BORDERS OF FILM, INTERNET AND ARCHIVE

With the almost complete establishment of digitalization, the media film and video have almost entirely merged with the medium of “computer,” and films and videos tend more and more to be received as simulated applications on the computer. Video platforms have developed from places to play films to film networks. But the borders remain open on many sides: at machinima films are shot in a game setting, odd mixtures of computer game, film, and theater. Consideration is given to archive access, which makes use of film grammars. The idea of the “public” is a factor that has to be considered in a completely different way than before. And the establishment of locative media has given rise to film cards, media geographies that put a further level beyond navigation or surfing in and beyond real sites, landscapes, and areas.

In the framework of Remediate, funded by the MFG Baden-Württemberg and the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation, several projects have been carried out by the Merz Akademie and the Akademie Schloss Solitude, which examine these developments, effects, and consequences in artistic research. The goal of the symposium “At the Borders of Film, Internet and Archive” is in part to present the research results, and above all to bring them together in a lecture series and panel with cultural producers and scholars from related areas with similar and different approaches and projects.
