"An impressive achievement that is considered groundbreaking in its field" – German Design Award Winner 2026 for the agency Solid White, founded by Merz Akademie graduates Patrick Müller, Christian von Bock, and Simon Walk. Congratulations!

Solid White received the award at the 2026 German Design Awards for excellence in web communication design. For their client Kisling, they developed the website www.e-motor-power.com, which, among other things, clearly illustrates how electric motors are constructed. As part of the Würth Group, Kisling AG is a leading global manufacturer of high-quality, application-specific adhesives and sealants.

The Jury‘s Statement
Clear knowledge transfer meets distinctive, confident design: »Microsite www.e-motor-power.com« impresses with its well-structured user guidance, making complex technical content tangible through interactive animations. The site is strategically tailored to the needs of developers and stands out for its consistent, characterful execution. An outstanding achievement that sets a benchmark within its field.

The Merz Akademie appointed comics artist Barbara Yelin to the Leibinger Professorship for Comics and Comic Studies. Following the completion of her prestigious international residency at Villa Massimo, she will assume the professorship at Merz Akademie in July 2026. Selected from a large number of outstanding international applications, Barbara Yelin emerged as prima inter pares in a highly competitive appointment process

Barbara Yelin is widely regarded as one of the most internationally renowned comic artists of her generation. Her works - including Irmina, Emmie Arbel: The Color of Memory, and most recently Die Giehse - are distinguished by their combination of artistic storytelling, historical research, and social commentary. Her work has received numerous awards and has been presented in international exhibitions and publications. In addition to her artistic practice, Yelin has long been committed to outreach and fostering networks within the comics community.

With the Leibinger Professorship, Merz Akademie is strengthening its artistic and scholarly engagement with comics across analog, digital, and hybrid forms. The professorship integrates practice and theory and is designed to provide sustained support for comics research and artistic production in the German-speaking world.

A particular focus will be placed on exploring comics as a medium for dialogue and as a research-oriented tool in multi-perspective fictional, biographical, and documentary narratives—for example, in science communication, cultures of remembrance, and postcolonial contexts. With her international network, extensive teaching experience, and proven track record in interdisciplinary collaboration, Barbara Yelin is exceptionally well suited to this profile.

Those who draw observe, see things differently, and perceive more. Those who write expand the horizons of understanding. And comics bring the two together. And I cannot praise highly enough the possibilities offered by the space in between, or how many of its paths remain unexplored. The most important people in this new program, however, will be the future students, who will bring their curiosity, their perspectives, their ideas, and their multiplicity of voices. I very much look forward to supporting them in turning this into a profession. (Barbara Yelin)

Merz Akademie student Zoe Schmidt wins the grand prize in the print category of the Meduc Award, a competition for young media professionals, with her work “Wo ist das Problem?” (Where's the problem?). Congratulations!

"Wo ist das Problem?" was created as part of a semester project led by photography professor Anja Weber. Zoe Schmidt dedicated her photo project to the Technisches Hilfswerk (THW), an institution that performs indispensable work in crises yet often remains invisible.

The opinion of the Meduc Award print jury:

With an exceptionally sensitive photographic style, she gives the volunteer helpers a stage that is often denied them in everyday life. The clear, emotional image compositions not only make their achievements visible, but also convey the human depth and strain behind every assignment. The result is a project that goes far beyond documentation: it honors a commitment that works behind the scenes but is invaluable to society.

Der Film "Leg Day" von Merz Akademie-Absolvent Paul Kley läuft auf dem 1. Gratulation!

Leg Day von Paul Kley

Merz Akademie has appointed artist Danja Vasiliev to the newly established Professorship of Emerging Media in Art and Design, starting in the winter semester 2025/26. With this appointment, the institution aims to strengthen a critical and reflective engagement with increasingly accessible and evolving technologies in teaching — and, above all, to emphasize the societal role of designers and artists.

The ways in which we communicate and consume information — the technologies and platforms we use — are constantly changing and seemingly accelerating. This includes social media platforms, the development of user interfaces, the use of AI, and the pursuit of enhanced user experience.

In close cooperation with the existing New Media department — which teaches all forms of digital design at Merz Akademie — the newly created Professorship of Emerging Media in Art and Design is intended to foster artistically critical engagement with technologies in constant flux and to encourage (future) designers to question their societal role.
The professorship will support experimental and documentary practices in areas such as media activism, creative coding, AI, and games, and to promote a reflective approach to social media. Technologies today serve not only as tools but also as powerful forces that shape and permeate all aspects of life — from privacy and personal security to autonomy and collective responsibility.

Merz Akademie is delighted to have appointed Danja Vasiliev to this new position.

President Dr Barbara M. Eggert emphasizes how his artistic and theoretical perspective will enrich the university’s profile: “As an artist, he has made significant contributions to discourse in the artistic-scientific field — not least as co-author of the Critical Engineering Manifesto (2011, with G. Savicic and J. Oliver). With his research interest in the interface of human-computer interaction and his hacker-oriented approach, he adds important dimensions to the Merz Akademie’s academic and artistic profile and will bring new impulses for activism through the means of art.”

Danja Vasiliev, born in Russia, is a media artist, critical engineer and lecturer who focuses intensively on computer technology, critically analyzing the internet, the use of personal data, and the complexity of networked systems. His works often deal with the creative misuse of technology, exposing vulnerabilities and questioning the mechanisms of control in digital systems.
One example is the project WannaScry! (2023), in which a security breach of a videoconferencing service was simulated. The intercepted biometric data — including age, mood, location, and chat logs — were publicly presented in Berlin, Madrid, and Brussels to raise awareness of potential misuse of such technologies.

He most recently taught in Nuremberg, Berlin, Linz, and Rotterdam and seeks to make students at Merz Akademie particularly aware of the value of open-source software.

“Open source offers the necessary freedom for experimentation, research, and modification of existing systems. It will give students the opportunity to deconstruct and rethink technological systems. Together with the faculty and students of Merz Akademie, I aim to cultivate a critical mindset, an ethical understanding, and a forward-looking perspective on the rapidly evolving media landscape of the future,” Danja Vasiliev states.

Kooperation mit LETsDOK - 6. Bundesweite Dokumentarfilmtage 2025

LETsDOK Filmabend am 29. September um 20 Uhr mit vier Kurzfilmen.

Der Kurzfilmabend thematisiert auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise die Themen Familie, Erinnerung, Heimat und Verlust von Heimat.

Die Filme Mykolaiv, Marcel, my Mom and I, RITMICA und Untitled entstanden als Abschlussarbeiten an der Merz Akademie.

Im Anschluss Filmgespräch mit Ulana Drashchenko, Ekaterina Gradoboeva und Beyza Dizi.
Moderation: Sabine Willmann - Filmemacherin, Kuratorin.

Illustrated stories for adults are a rarity. Prof. Florian Bayer was delighted, as he said, when he received the request to collaborate as an illustrator on Ewald Arenz's new book. The illustrated story "Katzentage" (Cat Days) will be published on September 16, 2025, by Dumont Verlag. Prof. Florian Bayer created 30 full-page color illustrations during his collaboration with Ewald Arenz.

Prof. Florian Bayer describes his approach:

The icing on the cake: the story is set in Würzburg, a city with which I have a very close connection. I studied there, worked there as a lecturer for many years, and always enjoy returning. So I went for a long walk and followed the route that Peter and Paula—the couple in the book—take on their special days. This allowed me to research countless motifs in advance and soak up the atmosphere of the city. This allowed me to research countless motifs in advance and soak up the atmosphere of the city.

With the printed manuscript in his bag, he drew countless small pencil sketches around the text – wherever passages of text evoked images in him. After the first draft with sketches, Prof. Florian Bayer made a selection and worked out the designs. In an inspiring back-and-forth process with the editor, further variations were created until the final selection was made.

The Merz Akademie will establish the Leibinger Professorship for Comics and Comics Research in the summer semester 2026

With this professorship, the Stuttgart design academy aims to promote and institutionalize the artistic and scientific examination of comics (analogue, digital, hybrid) in a close interlocking of practice and theory.

This is the first position of its kind to be explicitly advertised as a comics professorship in the German-speaking region.

Among other things, the position is linked to the conception and implementation of an International Summer School Comics and a part-time Master's degree course in Comics and Comics Research.

The professorship is funded by the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung, which has been awarding the Comic Book Prize since 2014. The contract was signed on June 30 by Markus Wener, Managing Director of the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung, and Dr. Barbara M. Eggert, Rector of the Merz Akademie and comics researcher.

The position is expected to be advertised in July 2025.

Dr. Barbara M. Eggert for the Leibinger Professorship for Comics and Comics Research:

I could not have wished for a better partner than the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung to realize my vision of creating a professorship that combines comics creation and comics research, and I am delighted that my funding application has been accepted by the foundation. Both as Rector of the Merz Akademie and as a comics scholar, it is important to me to make a contribution to promoting the medium of comics by creating the professorship and I am looking forward to starting the development of the Master's program.

What I wrote two years ago in Politik & Kultur, the newspaper of the German Cultural Council, is now taking shape: “This not only complements the media spectrum of the house, but also enriches the range of courses offered by the up-and-coming science location of Stuttgart, whose affinity for comics is already guaranteed by the proximity of various comic-affine institutions from publishing houses to the Comic Days, with a unique selling point.

The Berthold Leibinger Stiftung GmbH supports non-profit, charitable and church organizations as well as its own funding projects as it pursues its mission of preserving and further developing innovative science, a rich cultural landscape and a strong social commitment within society. It does this through sponsorship in culture and the sciences as well as by promoting church projects and fostering social commitment.

Congratulations to New Media graduate Florian Dusch and his agency zigzag on winning the German Brand Award 2025! Smila Gen 2, a digital medication dispenser, was honored by the German Design Council.

zizag successfully guided JDM Innovation through all phases of the design process, from initial research to final product launch: defining the product vision and requirements, designing the technological architecture, developing the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) designs, and finally implementing them through prototyping and development.

The jury's statement:
"Smila Gen 2" succeeds in designing a complex system consisting of a physical medication dispenser and digital applications in an impressively user-friendly way. With a clear focus on accessibility and intuitive use, the project connects patients, caregivers, and medical facilities in a seamless digital experience. Particularly noteworthy is the harmonious fusion of thoughtful design and technological scalability, which both facilitates the daily lives of patients and supports nursing staff. This consistent focus on the needs of all user groups sets new standards in user experience.
