Anja Weber is a professor of photography at the Merz Akademie. She sees photography as a tool for understanding the world, making the unnoticed visible, and developing one’s own narratives. For her, critical thinking and the understanding of design as a socially relevant tool are key skills for tomorrow’s designers. She wants to support students in taking their authorship seriously and in using their own agency.

Anja Weber photographs for editorial offices, institutions, artists and companies. In her artistic projects, she researches the topics of representation, identity and space, as well as questions of staging and assertion of reality in photographic images. She regularly develops photographic campaigns for public and civil society clients. Her projects have been funded by the European Union and the Stiftung Kunstfonds, among others.

Anja Weber studied photography and film/video in Dortmund, Exeter and New York in the 1990s. She was a Fulbright Scholar at New York University and the International Center of Photography. From 2017-2019 she taught photography at the German University in Cairo.
