Tactical Publishing – How to publish in the 21st Century?
What does it mean to publish in the twenty-first century? The transition from the current post-digital phase to the next phase should be culturally led by independent publishers and artists, supported by readers and machines, enabling new structures and actions that realise the potential of publishing and the preservation of content, thereby enriching social practices. The book of Alessandro Ludovico Tactical Publishing (MIT Press) published in 2024 combines accounts of tactical strategies with examples from artworks and experiments aiming to develop an alternative publishing system that transcends the dichotomy between paper and digital media.
Alessandro Ludovico is a researcher, artist and chief editor of Neural magazine since 1993. He received his Ph.D. degree in English and Media from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge (UK). He is Associate Professor at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. He has published and edited several books, including Post-Digital Print (Set Margins) and Tactical Publishing (MIT Press), and has lectured worldwide. He also served as an advisor for the Documenta 12’s Magazine Project. He is one of the authors of the award-winning Hacking Monopolism trilogy of artworks (Google Will Eat Itself, Amazon Noir, Face to Facebook). https://neural.it
