Alone Creating Togethe, Animation and Video Essays from students of the Merz Academy, class of Prof. Weijia Ma

“Alone Creating Together” is a collection of works made during COVID-19. Everything was done alone but through the courses and with different creative formats, such as animation, as well as video essays and social media intervention, the students found ways to work together. Those results are the perfect example to show how people worked together at Merz Akademie during the pandemic. The animation projects where taught by DAAD guest professor Weijia Ma.

In this selection of works from the Merz Akademie, students explore the space between the ideals and norms presented to them and their own lived experiences. Each work engages thoughtfully with the forces of technology, media and society that shape their understanding of the world around them. The question of what it means to live in today’s world was a big part of their workflow, from the first drafts to the final results. What is it like to be caught in the dimensions of identity, technology, social media and social prejudices, even though they already lived with them for most of their life.
