My bachelor’s project is a photographic portrait series in an artistic‑documentary style. I photographed FLINTA* (women, lesbian, intergender, non‑binary, trans‑, and agender) individuals who work in a craftig profession. In craftsmanship in Germany, FLINTA*s are severely underrepresented. One in four businesses is female-led and only one in five master’s examinations is taken by a woman. Without the “typically female” professions such as tailoring or goldsmithing, the statistics would look very different. Of 53 chambers of craftsmenship in Germany, only two are led by a female CEO. There are no official statistics on FLINTA*s.
What are the faces and stories of those who do not belong to the group of cis men? I establish a close and personal connection with the photographed individuals, speak with them about their experiences — from discrimination to the beauty of their professions. Some stories overlap, some differ greatly. I make sure to proceed through the project without imposing my own narrative, seeing myself first as a researcher, then as an artist. What becomes clearer with every encounter, however, is this: we need more role models!
